Symptoms

There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.

• Youth Unrest
• Poverty Aggravation

These three major categories of symptoms existed even at the time I finished school in 1988. We can easily see the current troubles through the same lens.

The problems are indicative of inequities affecting disadvantaged social segments. Instead of minor improvements to the most troubled, a visionary social balance needs to be cultivated with a long term perspective. The meritocracy needs to be designed deliberately and nurtured with great care.

The ethnicity issue is one of equal rights and justice. The LTTE rioted on this front. The youth face uncertainty of the future even if they succeed in their education. The JVP rioted on this front. The ruling class robbed the country and left people to basically die. The aragalaya is the beginning of active recognition on this front. It may go the French Revolution way or the Bolshevik Revolution way unless a peaceful transition into a democractic meritocracy is effected at the earliest.
