Refraining from all evil; attainment of what is good; cleansing of one’s thoughts; This is the advice of the Awakened Ones.
The Dhammapada, Verse 183
Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and pursue it.
Psalm 34:14 NKJV
We have been fighting for peace for decades. It will never come through conquest and victory. It will come through wisdom and compassion. What we must remember is that the goal is peace, not victory. Victory does not guarantee peace, but peace itself is victory.
We need to remain a peaceful country internationally and our foreign policy needs to reflect that. We need to stand up for what is right, at least on a case by case basis. Nonalignment is a timid cop out. If we are to deal peacefully and intelligently in international affairs, we need to understand the rest of the world. This means creating global citizens who have depth and breadth. Our education must be globalist.
We need the world to value a Sri Lankan in any given situation. We should have that unique brand that distinguishes us internationally. And what better brand to have than talented, intelligent and peaceful. That’s the way to arm ourselves for peace. The right education is of paramount importance.
